Things to do in and around Heidelberg Nature, country drives, fishing, boating, horse riding, whale watching and much more
There are many scenic day drives in the area including scenic mountain drives through the Tradouw Pass, the Gysmanshoek Pass and the Garcia Pass. Drive through the scenic farmlands or go to nearby Witsand for a swim in the sea. Take the country roads to Malgas and cross the Breede River on a hand drawn pont while exploring the area.
Golf, squash and bowls are all close by. You can also go horse riding in the mountains, through the fynbos and on the nearby beaches. Fish in the Duivenhoks or Breede rivers, go deep sea fishing or enjoy boating activities.
Walking trails, bird watching, swimming and mountain biking are some of the other activities. The Blue Crane, our national bird, is very common in the area. Walk through the indigenous forests at the Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve or hike in the Boosmansbos Wilderness Area. The walking trails can be day trips or sleep over trips with bird watching hides and beautiful mountain pools to swim in. The area offers some of the finest fynbos in the Western Cape.
Visit the many historic buildings in the town and enjoy the ambiance of country town living.
Go whale watching at Witsand only 35 km away where you will find the largest concentration of Southern Right Whales on the South African coast. From June to November the whales arrive to mate and calve. The official whale count in October 2002 from a helicopter was 117 adults and 49 calves spotted in the bay.
Bring your mountain bike and explore the many farm roads and tracks in the area.
